Chillingsworth's Legacy Season Ends November 28. Where Does Brewster Eat This Winter?

What does a Brewster winter evening look like without Chillingsworth? For seventy years the answer was simple, because the restaurant was there every season from May until after Thanksgiving. This year it closes on Saturday, November 28. Its owner has not said whether it will open again in May. So for the first time in decades, the answer depends on a short stretch of Route 6A and the corner of Underpass Road, where the town's cafés have already been extending their hours into the evening.

Seventy Years, Fifty of Them Under One Owner

Chillingsworth Restaurant and Bistro opened in 1956. The building is far older. Chef Robert "Nitzi" Rabin told the select board it dates to 1689 and was originally the estate of Foster Chillingsworth. Robert Stevenson ran the restaurant for its first 21 years. He sold it to Rabin and his wife in 1976, so 2026 is the fiftieth year of their ownership.

The Cape Cod Chronicle reported on October 28 that the town building inspector has found parts of the old building unsafe to occupy. Rabin told the board that a professional builder estimated $1.5 million in repairs before the restaurant could pass inspection next year. He added that the cost could climb from there, because supporting the upper level of a building that old would take extensive construction. Kathleen Morris, who oversees the front of the restaurant, framed what the staff were asking for in the same Chronicle report:

"This is his legacy season and our goal tonight is to see it to the end."

What the Select Board Allowed

The board agreed to that request with limits. The bar and main dining room can stay open. The older section, the room the staff call "the living room," stays closed. The restaurant closes for the season on November 28. At the meeting, Rabin made no commitment either way about reopening next May.

The calendar matters here. According to the Chronicle, Chillingsworth's common victualler and liquor licenses run through December 31, and the town normally issues them in December for the following year. Building officials also said the serious structural problems in the old building must be fixed before the restaurant can reopen in 2027.

As of publication day, that leaves about two weeks of dinners in the bar and main dining room. Anyone who has marked anniversaries or birthdays there has until the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

The Coffee Roaster That Stays Open Into the Evening

One of the bigger changes to Brewster's evening options came from a coffee company. Snowy Owl Coffee Roasters moved up Route 6A to the corner of Underpass Road, at 7 Underpass Road. At the new address, the café becomes something else at 3 p.m. Snowy Owl calls it the Night Owl: coffee, wine, beer, cocktails, mocktails and a short food menu.

Night Owl is open Thursday through Monday from 3 to 10 p.m. Snowy Owl has said live music, art-focused gatherings and tastings will be part of the Night Owl calendar. On November 2, local singer-songwriter Natalia Bonfini played a Monday evening set from 6:30 to 8, which Snowy Owl billed alongside wine, cocktails and tapas.

Set against Chillingsworth's season, the timing stands out. Chillingsworth has usually run from May until after Thanksgiving. Night Owl's posted schedule runs five nights a week, with events on its calendar into November, the month when the town's best-known dining room has always closed for the season.

Lily & Kappa Took Over the Old Snowy Owl Space

Snowy Owl's move freed up a well-known counter. Elvina Ramazanova applied for a common victualer's license for the former Snowy Owl space in late April. On April 27 she told the select board, "It's going to be a year-round cafe, or as I like to call it sometimes, a modern deli," as the Cape Cod Chronicle reported in June.

The café is Lily & Kappa, at 2624 Main St. next to Ace Hardware. The Chronicle reported in June that it serves breakfast, lunch and grab-and-go year-round from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is a family operation. Elvina runs it day to day, her husband Michael is the chef, and her sister Lilia Taylor, the "Lily" in the name, is a co-owner.

What to order:

  • Eggs cooked to order, with five cheeses, eight breads or wraps, and add-ons from bacon to arugula
  • Crepes, the specialty, in nine varieties. Savory versions include smoked salmon with dill, cream cheese, capers and avocado. A sweet version pairs raspberries with mocha whipped cream and white chocolate sauce.
  • Daily specials, such as a pastrami, egg and cheese with arugula and hot mayonnaise that the Chronicle found on the menu

Ramazanova told the board that she and her husband moved to the Cape after COVID, live in Brewster, and "do understand the seasonal nature," with a goal of hiring local people. Snowy Owl's move up the road kept a café in the old spot, and the town ended up with two year-round counters on this stretch of Route 6A.

Who Serves Dinner on Route 6A This Winter

Lily & Kappa covers the morning and Night Owl the late afternoon and evening. A full dinner menu is the harder thing to find in the off-season. These are the main options on the Route 6A corridor:

  1. Brewster Fish House, 2208 Main St. Its Fall 2026 schedule is Wednesday through Sunday, with lunch from noon to 3 p.m. and dinner from 5 p.m. The restaurant says it is open year-round.
  2. Uncle Pete's Chowder House, 1993 Main St. The Murphys bought the former Brewster Inn and renamed it. In June 2025 they told the Chronicle they intended to keep it open year-round. Its website links to Fall 2026 menus.
  3. Chillingsworth, bar and main dining room, through November 28.

The summer places closed weeks ago. Cobie's, at 3260 Main St., served its last day of the 2026 season on September 6 and is closed until 2027.

After November 28, Brewster Fish House is the main restaurant on this stretch of Route 6A with a published dinner schedule for the fall. Lily & Kappa, Night Owl and Uncle Pete's cover more of the day around it. Most of what is newly available this winter came from businesses that opened or moved in 2026.

The Calendar Around These Tables

The year-round restaurants sit near the town's off-season events, and most of those are along the same few miles of Main Street. From publication day through mid-December:

  1. Friday, November 13. "In the Whale" at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History.
  2. Saturday, November 14. Opening reception of the annual Holiday Pottery Sale featuring Cape Cod potters, noon to 4 p.m., at the Brewster Ladies' Library, 1822 Main Street. Lily & Kappa is open until 5 for a late lunch.
  3. Thursday, November 19. A talk by Jordan Kennedy at the museum.
  4. Sunday, November 22. Linda Coombs on King Philip's War at the museum. Brewster Fish House starts dinner service at 5.
  5. Saturday, November 28. Rainforest Reptiles at the museum during the day, and Chillingsworth's last scheduled night of the season.
  6. Sunday, December 6. The NRHS First Encounter Jazz Ensemble at the library.
  7. Wednesday, December 9. Holiday wreath-making at the Brewster Council on Aging, 1673 Main St., listed on the library's December calendar.
  8. Sunday, December 13. The Sky Meadow Recorder Consort with tenor Erik Bertrand at the library.

Every Sunday through March 21, the library's winter book sale runs from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Night Owl opens at 3 on Sundays, so a book sale and an early glass of wine fit in the same afternoon.

Chillingsworth's licenses come up for their usual December renewal, and Rabin has not said whether he will reopen. In the meantime, Brewster has a coffee roaster's evening bar at 7 Underpass Road, a year-round family café at 2624 Main St., and a fish house at 2208 Main St. that says it is open year-round and serves dinner five nights a week.
